The Northeast Corridor By Rail →
Wonderful storytelling: As I boarded the train in Boston that morning, I didn’t realize that I was about to glimpse an overlooked part of America. The secret hideouts of children and the homeless in the woods of Rhode Island, Baltimore’s decaying neighborhoods, and the industrial wastelands surrounding Philadelphia are sights hidden from everyone except local residents and Amtrak passengers.

Show Me The Money →
Now this is what US currency should look like. As a tourist to the ‘States, I have to say that a fat wad of bills that all look alike is a frustrating experience.

High Violet →
texturism: stream the national’s new album high violet on NYT (via david-noel) I have to add that this album is amazing, and very different from Boxer. It may be an acquired taste for some, I’d imagine, but I’m in love with it already.

On Being Overcharged →
(via delgrosso) If I get overcharged $5 at a restaurant, I don’t say anything. But when I put $1.25 in a vending machine and it doesn’t give me a Diet Pepsi, I will fingerbang that thing for an hour trying to get my five quarters back.

On Adoptions →
Insightful — adoption, especially that of international children, has gained some negative publicity after a boy was sent home to Russia alone. But it’s not all bad, as the NYT reports: “You can’t ever think you are getting a clean slate,” said Victoria Barrett, who lives in Tiverton, R.I., and adopted two children from orphanages in Siberia, a boy and a girl, now 8 and 7. “You can’t think...

Update: Vibram Five Fingers →
I made the mistake of not trusting the sizing chart enough — and had to return my original pair (a size 47). I have fairly large feet and usually fit into a US12/13, but ended up swapping down to a size 45 in the Classic’s. They fit much more snugly, and don’t require anywhere near as much pressure on the heel-strap to secure them. Planning on taking them for a proper walk/run first...

And They Have A Plan →
The answer was always going to be advertising (at least in some way), but the execution was what was up in the air for so long: Twitter will unveil on Tuesday a much-anticipated plan for making money from advertising, finally answering the question of how the company expects to turn its exponential growth into revenue. The advertising program, which Twitter calls Promoted Tweets, will show up when...

Denise Bovee →
I stumbled across Denise’s site this afternoon, and have been browsing through it ever since. Her wedding & portrait photography makes wonderful use of natural light, and it really is inspiring.

Voice Controlled Frustration →
It says something about a new product when people go out of the way to buy the old version of it. This happened to me when I went shopping for an iPod Shuffle today — I needed something small, light and durable and it fit the bill. But the new model is voice-controlled only, and this means you need to use Apple’s included earbuds. And that’s not really good enough. The included...

I’m on a bit of a fitness binge at the moment, if you could call it that. I’ve never been someone to enjoy running for fitness — swimming & cycling have always been my preference — but you can’t pass up the raw convenience just putting on some trainers and running a few miles. I don’t own a pair of running shoes at the moment (sad, I know!) but I’ve been shopping...
